Our mission: to breathe new life into the iconic West Course at Wentworth, making it enjoyable for Members and guests while maintaining its reputation as a tough test for tournament play.
The Course
The West Course hardly needs an introduction. As a long-standing favorite on the European Tour, it’s a name recognized by golfers and fans around the globe. Originally crafted by the legendary Harry Colt, the course has seen many changes over the years, with the most recent revamp in 2009 leaving some disappointment among Members and Tour players. To bring back the course’s strategic depth and fun factor, we embarked on a renovation in the summer of 2016.
Working alongside Ernie Els and his design partner, Greg Letsche, and guided by insights from a European Tour Advisory Group—including Paul McGinley, Thomas Bjørn, and David Jones—along with Wentworth’s Director of Courses, Kenny Mackay, and Chief Executive, Stephen Gibson, we developed a comprehensive plan to address all concerns and reinstate the course’s original charm and strategic challenge.
Status
Construction kicked off in early June, with MJ Abbotts taking the lead and Steve Clement overseeing construction management. The greens renovation was impressively wrapped up in just seven weeks, and the rest of the course was completed by early November. The West Course was ready for its grand reopening just in time for the BMW PGA Championships at the end of May 2017.
